The Art of Cinematography: Ernesto Zarur on ‘Un tal Borges’

This interview has been translated from its original language to English for your convenience“.

Hello, I’m Ernesto Zarur, a cinematographer with Mexican and Lebanese roots. I studied film in Mexico City and specialized in photography in New York. Currently, I work in Mexico City, Miami, and Los Angeles, represented by Agencia 9 AM.

Attraction to ‘Un tal Borges’

I got involved in ‘Un tal Borges’ due to my close relationship with Fernando Perezgil, the director. What attracted me most was the story and the psychological depth of the characters. The psychology of a character always wraps a good story.

Visual Style of the Film

The visual style for the film is based on everyday life. However, we aimed for the colors and texture of the image to reflect the drama and psychology of the characters.

Technical Challenges

One of the major technical challenges during the shoot was dealing with the limited film equipment and time constraints. Achieving the desired imagery with these limitations was quite a task, but in the end, we were able to capture the universe of the story.

Camera and Lenses

For ‘Un tal Borges,’ we chose to shoot with the Alexa Mini and Xeen lenses.

Collaboration with the Team

We always strive to work as a team to achieve our goals. Fernando Perezgil, the director, and Jorge Armando Martínez, the producer, are great friends of mine from many years back.

Lessons and Experiences

Every project is a learning experience and an opportunity for growth. The unique approach to each project, especially in fiction, helps us develop the visual style that defines the film.
